University of Calgary Calendar 2015-2016 Undergraduate Admissions A.17 English Language Proficiency
A.17 English Language Proficiency

All applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency for purposes of admission in one of the following ways:

(a) Successful completion of at least three years of formal, full-time study (not less than three courses per semester) at an English secondary or post-secondary institution in an English-speaking country which the University of Calgary recognizes as English language proficiency exempt; or

(b) Graduation from a degree program offered by an accredited university in a country which the University of Calgary recognizes as English language proficiency exempt; or

(c) A mark of 75 per cent or better on the Alberta English Language Arts 30-1 diploma examination (not the blended grade) OR a mark of 80 per cent or equivalent letter grade or better in Alberta English Language Arts 30-1 (blended mark) or equivalent course from other Canadian provinces.

(d) Attendance for a minimum of three years at a school that is an accredited member of the Council of International Schools (CIS), including completion of a senior non-ESL English course (Alberta 30 level or equivalent).

(e) Attendance at a school for a minimum of three years that is provincially authorized to offer a full Canadian curriculum, including completion of a senior non-ESL English course (Alberta 30 level or equivalent).

(f) Successful completion of a University of Calgary English course, comparative literature course, or university transferable equivalent with a final grade of "B-" or better.

Applicants may also satisfy the English Language Proficiency requirements by presenting one of the following:

Nursing

Bachelor of Education

All other Undergraduate programs3

University of Calgary International Foundation Program

Successful completion of Tier 3 courses with a minimum grade of "B" in each of IPFX 290, 293, and 297. Applicants must also present an additional speaking test (see Note 1).

1 In addition to the requirements indicated above, applicants to the Faculty of Nursing and the Werklund School of Education must also present one of the following in order to satisfy the Spoken English requirement:

2 A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and a minimum score of 5.0 on the Test of Written English (TWE) is also acceptable for undergraduate programs excluding the Faculty of Nursing and the Werklund School of Education.

3 Applicants to the Faculties of Environmental Design, Graduate Studies, Law, Medicine (excluding applicants to the Bachelor of Community Rehabilitation or Bachelor of Health Sciences) or Veterinary Medicine should check English Language Proficiency requirements directly with those faculties.

Please note: Applicants must satisfy two separate and distinct English Language requirements for admission to the University of Calgary:

1. The English subject acceptable in lieu of Alberta English Language Arts 30-1

AND

2. The English Language Proficiency requirement

Note: Students with disabilities should contact the University of Calgary Student Accessibility Services for information regarding alternative methods of evaluating the English proficiency of individuals who cannot take tests under standard conditions.

No student will be admitted unless this requirement has first been satisfied.
