Introduction

The Department of Communication and Culture hosts programs in Communications Studies; Film Studies; and Science Technology and Society.

First-year students in all degree programs offered by the Department of Communication and Culture are encouraged to explore courses in a variety of areas. It is recommended that a first-year program include: General Studies 201 (strongly recommended) and at least two of the following:

In addition, students should also select at least one full-course equivalent from the Faculty of Arts. Degree programs offered by the Department of Communication and Culture may include senior-level courses offered by other Departments either as core requirements or as options. It is therefore useful to take first-year courses from a variety of other areas.  In addition, students should normally select 1.0 full course equivalents from the Faculty of Science.

Students seeking advice on first-year course selection may contact the Communication and Culture Advisor or the Arts and Science Undergraduate Programs Office.

Admission to Major

Prospective students wishing to enter any of the BA Programs offered by the Department of Communication and Culture must meet the criteria in the section of this Calendar on A.2 “Admission Requirements" at the University of Calgary.

Limitation of Enrolment

Enrolment is limited in the Major in Communications Studies. Whenever demand exceeds capacity, enrolment will be limited and students will be admitted on a competitive basis.

Admission to Honours

The Faculty of Arts procedures for Admission to Honours established in section, 3.4.3 Honours Degrees with a Major Field are applicable and provide the overall framework.

Students taking Majors offered by the Department of Communication and Culture are eligible to apply for Honours by the May 1 deadline only if they will complete the program during the following academic year.

In addition to completing an application in the on-line Student Centre by the May 1 deadline, students must submit a completed application form for General Studies 590 (Honours Thesis) to the Communication and Culture Advisor. The application form must be signed by a thesis supervisor and include preliminary thesis proposal. To meet the May 1 deadline, it is recommended that students wishing to enrol in the Honours program obtain guidelines and an application form from the Communication and Culture Advisor no later than March 1. Students are strongly advised to secure a thesis supervisor no later March 15.

Overlapping Programs

Two or more programs from the Department of Communication and Culture can only be taken in conjunction with each other with approval from the Faculty of Arts. Similarly, programs from the Department of Communication and Culture can only be taken in conjunction with the interdisciplinary programs in Canadian Studies, Development Studies, Law and Society or Women’s Studies with Faculty approval. Consent is required for Double Majors, Combined Degrees and Second Baccalaureate Degrees, but not to Major-plus-Minor combinations or Double Minors.
