Accelerated High-dose Sequential Bilateral Theta Burst Stimulation for Treatment Resistant Depression: A randomized double-blind sham- controlled pilot study

Summary

Transcranial magnetic simulation (TMS) is a non-invasive stimulation treatment applied over scalp for people with major depression. This study explores whether theta-burst TMS, a newer form of TMS is effective as a treatment in patients with depression. Participants will be assigned to either receive real TMS therapy or a placebo version (sham stimulation), and participants will not know who received what. Then participants will undergo approximately three real TMS or placebo stimulation sessions a day for 10 days in 2 weeks ( total 30 sessions). At the end of the 4 weeks, participants will be assessed to see how their depressive symptoms may have changed.

Eligibility

Currently recruiting participants: No

Eligible gender: Male, Female, Transgender, Other

Eligible ages: 18 to 65

Inclusion criteria:

To be involved in this study, participants must:

1. be aged 18-65
2. have a diagnosis of unipolar major depressive disorder
3. have failed to respond to at least one antidepressant

Exclusion criteria:

Participants must not:

1. have Psychosis, Manic depression or Bipolar depression, Substance abuse
2. have severe neurological diseases : epilepsy, stroke, dementia, Parkison’s disease, multiple sclerosis
3. be pregnant
