University of Calgary Retirees Association creates community of retired faculty and staff

New era unites emeriti and retired faculty and staff under a common umbrella

In a significant move toward greater inclusivity, the University of Calgary Retirees Association (UCRA) expanded its membership criteria in 2022 to include retired faculty and staff members, in addition to emeriti. Recently elected UCRA President Sheila Evans is leading the efforts to create an all-encompassing retiree community.

“We encourage retired faculty and staff to become valued members of UCRA,” explains Evans. “Our combined experiences bring a unique and valuable perspective to the association, strengthening the sense of community.”

With an affordable annual fee of $25 for Calgary residents and $15 for those outside the city, retirees can maintain a strong connection with the University of Calgary. The monthly UCRA meetings, open to all, offer engaging presentations from faculty, graduate students, and affiliates. Members also receive monthly e-newsletters and help support the Retirees Association Award for Indigenous Students.

With an expanded membership comes the need to better understand the expectations and desires of all retirees. UCRA initiated a survey, soliciting insights that will shape the development of programs and activities. The results will ensure that UCRA remains a vibrant and relevant part of retirees' lives, providing tailored offerings that resonate with their varied interests.

“Together with the UCRA executive team, we want to offer a retirees association that not only meets but exceeds the expectations of all retired UCalgary faculty and staff,’ says Evans.

Retired faculty and staff who want to share their feedback and contribute to the association's growth can participate in the survey if they haven’t done so already. Anyone interested in more information about UCRA and how to become a member can email retirees@ucalgary.ca or visit the website.
