The Cumming School of Medicine is mourning the passing of Maxine Fisher, who passed away on Feb. 17, 2024. She was 96.

Born in Edmonton, Maxine eventually moved to Calgary and started working at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Medicine, now Cumming School of Medicine, in the office of the associate dean, Education in 1973.

In 1975, Maxine was asked to take on the position of student affairs coordinator and admissions officer, where she remained until her retirement in 1987.

She was affectionately known as Momma Max by her beloved students, who knew her door was always open for lengthy chats about anything they needed to discuss, academic and personal.

Following the passing of her first husband, Maxine married Dr. Tony Fisher, professor and head of the department of Anatomy in the Faculty of Medicine.

An accomplished pianist, baker, singer, decorator, gardener, house renovator who loved animals and travel, the couple retired to British Columbia in 1987.

The family is planning a Celebration of Life to take place in the summer. For more, please read Maxine’s obituary: https://calgaryherald.remembering.ca/obituary/maxine-fisher-1089421247
