Get started on the right foot in this 2-hour lecture and learn about clothing for hiking, footwear selection, blister prevention, daypack essentials, animal safety and suggestions for great places to hike. Discover Day Hiking Series
Learn about hiking by getting out with our experienced guides. This introductory course includes the Prepare for Day Hiking lecture and 3 day hikes that progress from easy on-trail walking to hikes with more distance and elevation gain, and some off-trail travel. This series is ideal for people who are new to hiking. Prerequisite: none. Includes: lecture, guide, 3 day hikes.
Guided Day Hikes
Join us for a day of group hiking in the Bow Valley, Kananaskis Country and beyond with an experienced guide. Enjoy spring flowers, ridgetop views, pristine lakes, alpine meadows and fall colours while learning about local ecology, pacing, travel skills, map reading, group safety and more. Trips are available for all fitness levels and interests. Prerequisite: none. Includes: guide. Some trips include van transportation.
Choose 3 Hiking Series
This versatile 3-week hiking series allows you to choose 3 of the 4 hikes based on your own availability and interest. The series has hikes with different difficulty ratings, and offer a variety of locations on a particular theme. There is an optional Prepare for Day Hiking lecture before the series for new hikers, or those who could use a refresher. Prerequisite: none. Includes: guide, 3 day hikes.
Wildflower Interpretive Hike
Learn how to identify some of the common wildflower species you'll encounter in the Rocky Mountains. On this moderate day hike to a colourful meadow, you'll have a chance to take a close look at different types of flowers and explore the forest plants, while also getting a great view through the mountains. Prerequisite: none. Includes: interpretive guide.
Edible Plants Interpretive Hike
On this guided day hike, we'll take it slow and explore the forest floor, learning which plants we can eat and ways the plants have been used by both natives and early settlers. This is a great way to really learn about a specific natural area. Prerequisite: none. Includes: interpretive guide.
Easy Does it Hiking Fitness Series
Change your lifestyle over 8 weeks with a series that combines outdoor fun with indoor fitness training—ideal for those new to hiking and who have been fairly inactive. At the end of the program, you can expect to be able to complete a level 3 hike. Includes weekly training sessions led by a certified trainer, 3 evening workshops on a fitness or hiking topic and a day hike in the mountains each weekend, progressing in distance and elevation each week. Prerequisite: none. Includes: guide, fitness trainer, 3 evening workshops, 8 x 1-hour evening training session, 8 x full-day weekend hike.
The Hiking Fitness Builder
Ramp up your fitness and commit to a series that will get you out hiking every weekend. It is designed for people who are currently active, but want to prepare for big summer goals. At the end of the program, you can expect to complete level 5 hikes and more. Includes weekly training sessions led by a certified trainer, 3 workshops on a fitness or hiking topic and a day hike in the mountains each weekend, progressing in distance and elevation each week. Prerequisite: moderate physical condition (ability to comfortably complete a level 3 hike). Includes: guide, fitness trainer, 3 evening workshops, 8 x 1-hour evening training session, 8 x full-day weekend hike.
On this 5-week guided series, we will hike to the summit of a mountain or ridge every week–no climbing skills involved. Enjoy great workouts, exiting trails and fantastic photo opportunities. Prerequisite: good physical condition, recent experience on level 4+ hikes. Includes: guide, 5 full-day hikes.
Don't let your fear of bears, cougars or other animals keep you out of the backcountry. In this 2-hour lecture, learn about bear signs and behaviours, how to avoid them and what to do when you do meet an animal on the trail. Prerequisite: none. Includes: instructor.
C. Hiking & Fishing
Take your angling skills a little higher and join us for a full day of fly fishing at a beautiful mountain destination. Hike with our experienced hiking guide/fly fisher who will take the group to a lake that provides the opportunity to catch cutthroat trout. Learn about angling options in the Rockies, and get inside tips and new destination ideas. Prerequisite: Fly Fishing A recommended, valid Alberta Sportfishing License. Includes: guide/instructor.
Intro to Tracking
Ever wondered how 'Mantracker' tracks his prey? Join us for an introductory course taught by a Search and Rescue expert. This weekend course will be a blend of classroom and outdoor practical field exercises, designed to set you up with the skills you need to be able to detect, read and follow tracks and signs in the backcountry. The course is offered in conjunction with Rocky Mountain Adventure Medicine. Prerequisite: none. Includes: certified instructor, course manual, course completion certificate.
Outdoor School - Schools
Take your class outside and into nature! Through outdoor education and experiential learning, your students will have the opportunity to develop communication skills, grow as a team, and have fun! Our programs are designed for the grades 1 - 6 Alberta science and physical education curriculum, and are intended to facilitate teachable moments. Our program coordinators will work with you to develop and modify programs to meet your classroom’s needs and learning objectives.
