Capoeira

Winter 2024 registration opens Nov. 15, 2023
Program starts January 16, 2024
15 spots

Capoeira is a martial art, dance and art form that combines kicks, escapes, take-downs and acrobatics with an exotic musical aspect, style and artistic expression. Originating in the Northeast of Brazil (about 400 years ago), by slaves from the African continent, Capoeira had to be practiced in secrecy after its lethal potential was discovered by the slave masters. Although Capoeira was created as a way to free the slaves from their oppressors, it has evolved into one of the most hypnotic and interesting art forms yet to come out of Brazil. Two major styles of Capoeira exist in Brazil today, Angola and Regional.

Capoeira is very beneficial for kids and teenagers as well, it teaches the importance of discipline, respect, honor, self defense and the value of friendship. Another special things about Capoeira is that it also develops great musicality as it incorporates singing, clapping, drumming, and playing various musical instruments. One of the most incredible effects of Capoeira is that it keeps the body and mind sharp – its believed to prolong the life due to the healthy lifestyle, happiness, movement culture and music that keeps us young even at old age. You can see many old Capoeira masters still doing incredible tricks and traveling all over the world into their 70’s and 80’s.

Capoeira is done in a roda “circle”, it is called “Capoeira Game” which is played, not fought, and played with a partner, NOT against. Because of that Capoeira creates a community of friends that come together to train hard and push one another to continue progressing in all aspects of life. The uniqueness of Capoeira will give your body physical strength, power, flexibility and coordination. It also strengthens the mind self-confidence, concentration, courage, creativity and dedication.

Floorball is a type of floor hockey that uses three- five field players and a goalie. Games can be played indoors or outdoors on just about any surface. Floorball is like hockey but with some key differences.  Players are not allowed to stick check, stick lift, or go through the opponents stick to dispossess the ball.  Floorball is primarily a non-contact sport aside from shoulder-to-shoulder contact, similar to basketball or soccer.

What is the difference between floorball and hockey?
The big difference between the two is that the rules of floorball do not allow for any high sticking, stick contact, or body contact, so the game tends to be less physical than Floor Hockey and more skill oriented and fast paced.

All equipment will be provided by Intramurals, with the except for goalie masks, they must be supplied by the participant.

Athletes in this program will be challenged with a wide variety of technical skills on each apparatus as well as strength and flexibility. Trampoline is about body control and body awareness and from that, the result of hard work and dedication to the skill progressions comes the ability not just to flip, but to allow the child to progress through multiple tricks and flips in a routine format. It is through this progression that our coaches will work together to determine the readiness of the child through our assessment process. This program is considerate of age and ability and is set up for children coming a minimum of once a week for an hour and 25 minutes.  Athletes who have progressed their gymnastics skills who are ready for a more challenging skillset and who want more training time in the gym may be invited by a coach or through an assessment process to join the ADVANCED Teen T&T Program.   This program will be by invite only as we want to ensure that the like mindedness and skills required for mobility into this program meet the requirments for further development. This program is based on a 2 hour program coming once a week.

Registration is by age group:
Ages 6-7
Ages 8-9
Ages 10-17
