Backpacking Basics Lecture

Learn how to prepare for backpacking in the Rockies. Topics include how to select gear such as packs, tents, sleeping bags and clothing, how to plan backcountry meals/menus and how to set up camp. Prerequisite: none. Includes: instructor.

Intro to Lightweight Backpacking Lecture

Learn the skills needed to go backpacking with a pack weighing less than 25 pounds. Aimed at backpackers who have the basics down, this lecture explores the packing, clothing, cooking and sleep systems that enable you to go faster and lighter safely. Prerequisite: none. Includes: instructor.

Intro To Backpacking: Elbow Pass

Perfect for the beginner backpacker, this course combines the Backpacking Basics Lecture with an easy overnight trip in Kananaskis. Learn the skills needed to enjoy multi-day backcountry trips, then head out with an experienced guide to put it all into practice. Prerequisite: good physical condition. Includes: guide, overnight permits/fees, group camping gear.

Backpacking Ribbon & Lillian Lakes

Join our experienced guides and visit 3 beautiful Kananaskis valleys on this point-to-point 3-day backpacking trip that crosses Buller Pass and Guinn's Pass. You'll see sweeping views from the high passes, enjoy quiet nights at Ribbon and Lillian Lakes and hike to the alpine Galetea Lakes.  Total distance is 24.8km, with 1200m of elevation gain. A pre-trip lecture covers the logistics of group camping. Prerequisite: none. Includes: guide, permits, camping fees, group camping gear*, van transportation to and from trail heads. *We will be sharing 2- and 3-person MSR tents and cooking shared meals on liquid fuel stoves.

Backpacking the Iceline Trail

The Iceline Trail is a moderate 3-day backpacking trip through a spectacular section of Yoho National Park that has a large amount of the trail well above treeline. You'll see glaciers, waterfalls and meadows while hiking a loop with our guides through the cirques and valley. Total distance is 30.3km, with 1250m of elevation gain. A pre-trip lecture covers the logistics of group camping. Prerequisite: none. Includes: guide, permits, camping fees, group camping gear*. Backpacking Tonquin Valley

The Tonquin Valley is known as one of the most beautiful places in the Rockies—extremely popular with early explorers. In this 4-day backpacking trip, we'll go deep into Jasper's backcountry to camp by the Amethyst Lakes—which were named for their rich color, and marvel at the towering wall of the Ramparts. Total distance is 45km, with 900m of elevation gain. A pre-trip lecture covers the logistics of group camping. Prerequisite: none. Includes: guide, permits, camping fees, group camping gear*. Transportation to and from trailheads: carpool. *We will be sharing 2- and 3-person MSR tents and cooking shared meals on liquid fuel stoves.

Backpacking Expedition: Teens

Head out to the mountains in Kananaskis with our backpacking guides for a multi-day trip of exploring and backcountry camping. Our guides will teach you route-finding, navigation, backcountry cooking, campsite management and animal safety. Backpacking Expedition 101 is a 3-day (2-night) introduction and Backpacking Expedition 201 is a 5-day extended trip for those who want a challenge. Required: check equipment list and additional information in the online event details. Prerequisite: must attend pretrip meeting with a parent to discuss required items and cover meal planning (food is not included). Includes: backpacking guide, all group gear, transportation.
