The University Calgary has increased efforts related to mental health on campus with the creation of the Mental Health Task Force.

Initiated in January of 2015, the task force was assembled to develop an overarching mental health strategy for the University of Calgary. This strategy will influence policies and procedures on campus, and will shape the direction and evaluation of programs offered. The Mental Health Task Force reports directly to the provost and vice-president (academic). The strategy developed is intended to help build a stronger campus community.

“It’s essential that students, faculty and staff feel that they have the necessary resources available so that they can get the assistance they require, anytime,” said Provost Dru Marshall. “The creation of the Mental Health Task Force further demonstrates our commitment to the health and wellness of our full community.”

The Mental Health Task Force has representation from all stakeholders, including academic staff, AUPE, MaPS, undergraduate students, graduate students, and community members. A full list of Steering Committee and Working Group members are listed on the website.

Students, staff and faculty are encouraged to offer feedback and become involved in the process.  Input from all members on campus will help ensure that strategies outlined meet the needs of community members.

“We want to build a stronger and more resilient campus community. Input from all members including students, faculty and staff, will help us to ensure our goal is achieved,” said Debbie Bruckner, senior director, Student Wellness, Access and Support, University of Calgary.

If you’re interested in becoming part of the process, e-mail your feedback to provost@ucalgary.ca.

The Task Force is aiming to have a draft report prepared for initial review by the General Faculties Council (GFC) and the Board of Governors by June 2015. A final report will go forward for approval at both GFC and the Board of Governors in October 2015. Implementation of key strategies will start shortly thereafter.
