Review qualifications and training as part of the hiring process to ensure work activities can be performed safely.

Complete site-specific health and safety orientation checklists with direct reports to address critical health and safety issues before they start their normal job responsibilities.

Complete the University’s health and safety orientation within the first week of employment.

Provide job specific and ongoing training to direct reports as identified in Hazard Assessment and Control Forms (HACF).

Complete all job-specific training as identified in Hazard Assessment and Control Forms (HACF) including ongoing training such as re-certification.

1 Manager means an Employee who has management responsibility and includes academic staff members and management and professional staff members who have management responsibility and direct reports. All members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) are Managers.

2 Supervisor means an Employee who supervises other Employees; it does not include a Manager. Supervisors have direct reports.

3 Employee means an individual who is engaged to work for the University under an employment contract. This includes academic staff, support staff, management and professional staff, senior leadership team, researchers, faculty members, visiting scholars, post-doctoral fellows, volunteers, graduate students who are remunerated by the University and students performing work on behalf of the University or their instructor.

Asbestos Awareness Training Online Mandatory training for university employees completing work activities that may impact or be adjacent to asbestos-containing material. * Optional training for university employees and students who would like to become informed about asbestos.
Biosafety (Introduction) Training Classroom Mandatory for university employees, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows working with biohazards (Risk Group 2 or greater) for research or teaching purposes. *

Biohazards are pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria, viruses & fungi), potentially infectious materials (cell lines, tissues, body fluids and prions) as well as microbial toxins (pertussis, botulinum toxin).

Biosafety training from organizations other than the University of Calgary is NOT recognized.

Biosafety (Bloodborne Pathogens) Training Online ** Recommended training for university employees and students working with specific bloodborne pathogens or human cell lines, tissues, body fluids and/or other potentially infectious materials that may contain bloodborne pathogens.
Contractor Accountability to Safety Program (CASP) Classroom Mandatory for all contracted workers who perform work or intend to perform work on university owned or leased facilities.
Emergency Warden Training Online Mandatory training for university employees who are serving as Emergency Wardens and Senior Emergency Wardens.
Hazard Assessment Training Online

Mandatory training for all University Employees, Supervisors and Managers.

Hazard Assessment Workshop Classroom

Designed to assist Supervisors and Managers complete Hazard Assessment and Control Forms (HACF) and Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHA). The online Hazard Assessment Training course is a prerequisite an must be completed prior.

Hearing Conservation Training Online Mandatory training for university employees who are exposed to noise at or above an 8-hour TWA of 82 dB (or 80 dB TWA for a 12 hour shift) and for university employees who work in areas with noise levels at or above 85 dB. * Optional training for university employees and students who would like to become informed about hearing conservation.
Incident Investigation Training Classroom Mandatory training for university employees who are responsible for conducting incident investigations.
Ladder Safety Training Online Mandatory training for university employees who use portable or fixed ladders for work activities. * Optional training for university employees and students who would like to become informed about ladder safety.
Laser Safety Training In Lab

Mandatory for university employees and students working with Class 3b & 4 Lasers in University of Calgary facilities or laboratories. *

Occupational Health & Safety Orientation Online Mandatory for all University Employees, Supervisors and Managers. MUST be completed within the first week of employment.
Office Ergonomics Training Online Mandatory training for university employees where the majority of work is performed in front of a computer. * Optional training for university employees and students who would like to become informed about office ergonomics.
Radioactive Material Safety Training Blended Mandatory training for university employees and students working with radioisotopes for research and/or teaching purposes. *

Respiratory Protection Training Online Mandatory training for university employees wear a respirator has been identified for use during work activities. Completion of this course is a prerequisite for respiratory fit testing. * Optional training university employees and students who would like to become informed about respiratory protection.
Responding to a Violent Intruder on Campus (formerly 'Lockdown') Classroom ** Recommended training for university employees and students who would like to learn how to response to a violent intruder situation.
Safe Lifting Training Online Mandatory for university employees who perform manual material handling as a part of work activities.* Optional for university employees and students who would like to become informed about safe lifting.
Slips, Trips and Falls Prevention Training Online ** Optional training for university employees and students who would like to become informed about slip, trip and fall prevention.
Spill Response Training Online Mandatory for university employees, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows working with hazardous materials. * Optional training for university employees and students who would like to become informed about spill response.
Standard First Aid CPR Level C and re-certification Classroom Refer to information and criteria outlined at https://www.ucalgary.ca/safety/first_aid_course
Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Certification Classroom Mandatory training for university employees and students who handle, offer for transport, or transport dangerous goods as defined in the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Regulations.*
WHMIS & Safety for Laboratories Training Classroom Mandatory training for university employees, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows  working  in a LABORATORY setting. In addition to WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) training, this session covers the information provided in the new faculty and staff OH&S orientation. *

WHMIS training from organizations other than the University of Calgary is NOT recognized.

WHMIS (Non-Laboratory) Training Online Mandatory training for university employees and students working in a NON-laboratory setting, with or near controlled products as defined by WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) legislation.*

Site-specific H&S Orientation Checklists - Mandatory

Supervisors and Manager are responsible to complete site-specific health and safety orientation checklists with direct reports to address critical health and safety issues before they start their normal job responsibilities.
