Qualified students may be placed in internship positions with local professional theatre organizations. Students may be accepted as interns in areas such as Acting, Design, Stage Management, Playwriting, Dramaturgy, Theatre Administration, and Directing. In addition, students uncertain as to their specific career goal may be accepted as General Interns.
Students enrol in Drama 591 and 593 in the Fall and Winter Terms respectively. These two half course credits may be presented as part of the BFA (Drama) degree program requirements. Students are assigned to a faculty supervisor, who acts as their lecture instructor, while the theatre organization functions as separate lab setting for the course.
While students receive only two half courses for academic credit, the overall internship, inclusive of the professional placement, represents a “full-time” experience. Students accepted as interns become full-time members of a professional theatre company. During their time as an intern, they are expected to devote themselves full-time to this activity. Interns are paid a monthly salary by their theatre company for the duration of the eight-month internship. Tuition fees for the Drama 591 and 593 are assessed as “Co-op/Intern” fees in the Undergraduate Tuition and General Fees Chart.
