5.7.1 Programs in Physics
Courses constituting the field of Physics

All courses labelled Physics except Physics 271, 303 or 371

Astrophysics 609

Required Courses - Major Program

See also Section 3 (Faculty Regulations), Subsections 3.4B (Program Requirements - Major Programs) and 3.5B (Course Selection - Introductory Courses).

1.0 FCE - Physics 227 and 255

0.5 FCE - Mathematics 211 or 213

0.5 FCE - Applied Mathematics 217 or Mathematics 249 or 251

0.5 FCE - Applied Mathematics 219

1.0 FCE - Chemistry 201 or 211 and one of Chemistry 203 or 213 or Biology 241 or Astrophysics 213

0.5 FCE - Computer Science 217

6.5 FCE - Physics 325, 341, 343, 375, 381, 397, 443, 449, 455, 457, 497, 501, and 599 or 598

0.5 FCE - 400- or 500-level Physics option

0.5 FCE - Mathematics 311 or 313

1.5 FCE - Applied Mathematics 307, 309 and 433

4.0 FCE - Breadth requirement: Options from Faculties other than the Faculty of Science (check Table I in 3.4 Program Requirements for ineligible courses). Of these 4.0 FCE, at least 1.0 FCE must be from the Faculty of Arts.

1.0 FCE - Science options

2.0 FCE - Options

Notes:

Students who achieve a grade of "A-" or better in Physics 211 or 221 may use either of these courses in place of Physics 227.

It is strongly recommended that students take 1.0 FCE English to complete the 1.0 FCE Faculty of Arts requirement.

The Applied Mathematics 217, 219, and 309 sequence can be replaced with a sequence of Mathematics 281, 283, and 381 OR with Mathematics 251, 253, 349, and 353.

Students using only a single chemistry course to fulfill their program requirements may use Chemistry 203 or Chemistry 209 in place of the suggested Chemistry 201 or 211.

Required courses - Honours Program

Same as in Major Program except that Physics 599, 0.5 FCE Physics option, 0.5 FCE Science option and 1.5 FCE Options are replaced by:

1.0 FCE - Physics 598

2.0 FCE - Physics 451, 481, 543 and 597

Recommendations

It is strongly recommended that Applied Mathematics 217 be taken in preference to Mathematics 249 or 251.
