Canadian Obesity Network website launched at University of Calgary

Dr. Arya Sharma, director, the Canadian Obesity Network, spoke Friday, Dec. 2, at a Division of Health Sciences-hosted reception to officially launch www.obesitynetwork.ca, the website for the national network formed to reduce the mental, physical and economic burden of obesity on Canadians. The U of C is a founding member of the organization.

“Currently in Canada, more than 5.5 million adults and 500,000 children are obese. Rising incidences of type II diabetes, heart disease, liver disorders and movement disorders in our society – to name a few – can all be directly attributed to obesity,” said Sharma, also a professor of Medicine at McMaster. “My hope is that linking obesity researchers, health professionals and other stakeholders across Canada will help reduce the burden of this insidious condition.”

Nationally, more than 30 University of Calgary researchers contribute to the four main themes of the Canadian Obesity Network – environmental and socio-cultural factors; behavioural & biological determinants; prevention, treatment & rehabilitation; and health economics & policy. Dr. David Lau, professor of Medicine at the U of C, leads the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation theme nationally.

“Closer to home, U of C researchers are working under the Division of Health Sciences umbrella to encourage and promote obesity research both at the university and within the Calgary Health Region,” says Dr. Keith Sharkey , professor, Department of Physiology and Biophysics and leader of the Calgary Obesity Initiative. “We are also working with the University of Alberta to plan an Alberta obesity research summit for spring 2006.”

The multi-disciplinary research conducted by the Calgary Obesity Initiative is just one example of the role the Division of Health Sciences can play in tackling research problems in a variety of ways, bringing work from lab bench to patient bedside, and into the community.
