A Place That Builds

A poem read at the UCalgary Community Day celebrating the UCalgary 60th Anniversary

The Physical Buildings

If you asked us how we built our university,

We might picture the pounding sounds of construction,

The skylight panes being pressed into place in Mathison Hall,

The ice of an oval rink crystallizing,

And even the metal wings of a Prairie Chicken, fusing into flight.

We Build Other Things

But we also build other things.

We build lifelong friendships

Over the clatter of conversation and cutlery in Mac Hall.

Build marriages

From that first flutter of butterflies in the Den soundtracked by the fuzzy feedback of your new-found favourite song.

Build lore

in the echoing steps in a stairwell, ascending each sentence of a story.

Build self-expression

in the brush of fresh paint on the rock, a cornerstone of our past, present, and future.

We Build Businesses, Research, and Innovation

We build ground-breaking ideas,

With the hiss of a Bunsen burner igniting in a late-night lab,

The soft hum of quantum acoustics,

The crackle of an electric arc,

The stream flowing from a faucet.

Science

We build excitement

With the squeak of a whiteboard marker mapping out an innovation,

The frenzied babbles around a table,

The collective gasp as a light bulb illuminates.

Physical Business

We build startups

With the click of connectors snapping into place.

With the clicks, buzzes, and pings of a new app.

The trickle of a water droplet along a cool glass,

The swipe of a debit card

The whisk of ingredients,

The grind of coffee beans,

The beep of a ticket scan,

The sizzle of butter.

Office Businesses / Research

We build teams. In the snort of laughter in a conference room,

The ding of a clever comment in the group chat,

The collective unmuting of a video call.

Research / Human Performance / Adventure

We build adventures.

With the huff of heavy breath as muscles strain

The secure snap of a helmet clicking into place.

The whoosh of snowy peaks,

And the rush of white rapids,

Leaving our fingerprints all over the Rockies and beyond.

We Build Talent

We Build Talent

In harmonies reverberating off of the rich, wood paneling of the Rosza Centre,

Feet skittering across the stage in the University Theatre,

Or jostling bodies scream-singing lyrics in the MacEwan Concert Hall.

We Build Inclusion

We build inclusion.

In the woosh of rainbow-coloured candles,

The crunch of bannock tacos,

The clink of glasses as the first in their family crosses the stage.

We Build Better People

We build better people,

With a hug after a hard test,

a crucial cup of coffee at 3am,

Or a four-year-old’s fingers dipping into acrylics after life-changing treatments.

We Build Community

We Build Community

Through the crackle of commentary surging through the soundwaves of CJSW

Through the exhale of downward dog in That Empty Space

Through the muffled footsteps of Rex's plush costume,

The roar of the crowd at a Dinos game,

The shuffle of chairs at an alumni mixer,

The clank of a dumbbell in the gym.

Added transition

So while we build

foundations

and frameworks

and classrooms

and the physical walls of this institution,

We build so much more.

Inspirational Victory Lap (Building Sequence)

We build Energy

Build Confidence

Build Belonging

Build Impact

Build Pride

Closers

We build a brighter future, Ahead of Tomorrow
