PLANTING TYPOLOGY ANALYSIS

City Planting Typology

The City of Calgary used to routinely plant elm trees in subdivisions on the City's right-of-way between the sidewalk and the property lines of residential lots.  The responsibility for tree plantings then fell to the developers during the 1960's and 1970's.  Since then the feeling of the street has changed.

Elements of City Plantings:

  • Trees are regularly spaced and are planted near the sidewalk.

  • The City used one type of tree for the whole street which created a consistant canopy structure.

  • This planting type focuses the eye and presents a strong pattern.
