PARKDALE COMMUNITY'S

URBAN FOREST

ISSUES AND RECOMMENDATIONS

ISSUES

RECOMMENDATIONS

Aesthetics

  • Of the three planting typologies, we think the City of Calgary typology was the most powerful.

  • The recommendation is to follow the structure of that typology:

    • consistant tree species

    • regularly spaced

    • planted closed to the sidewalk to create a canopy over the street

  • The tree type we recommend is the elm.

    • the elm has a dense vase-like canopy structure

    • it is a long-lived species (about 100 years)

Engineering

  • Planting trees in the right-of-way between the sidewalk and residential property line may interfere with existing utilities buried underground.

  • Community can enter into a partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Calgary.

    • Parks and Recreation can help apply for the permits required to plant the street trees (Engineering needs to see where the tree is to be planted to make certain the tree will not interfere with any services).

    • once a tree is planted in the right-of-way, it becomes the responsibility of Parks and Recreation, so a partnership with them would allow them some control over the placement of the trees.

Private Property

  • How would we get homeowners to participate in the street tree program?

  • We could encourage participation through explaining our rationale for this program.

    • environmental benefits

    • aesthetic presence

    • increases land values

    • available funding

Funding

  • How can the Parkdale community pay for this program?

  • Partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department.

    • ForEverGreen Program

      • Parks and Recreation assists communities financially in planting trees on public property through their economies of scale (ie. they buy trees in bulk and can get a better price for them)

    • Parks and Recreation also receives funding for trees from Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), donations from private corporations, and from compensation paid to them for the removal of existing trees

  • Funding can also come from a levy on property taxes as agreed to by two thirds of the homeowners in a community.

Age Diversity

  • How do we diversify the ages of the street trees to mitigate a future mass planting requirement?
