Mission

The purpose of the Centre is to provide innovative, practical, and leading edge research, products, and services to communities, regions, individuals, and organizations. Through a long-term commitment to this mission, the Centre will be a highly visible University-based research and outreach organization which offers unique interdisciplinary research, advice, information, and support to a range of client groups on local, provincial, national as well as international levels. The Centre will work with University groups and faculties in helping to meet community and organizational needs as well as provide support services for faculty and student scholarly activity.


Goals

In order for the Centre to attain its vision in the manner described in its mission statement, the achievement of the following primary strategic goals must be realized:
  • Ensure that the Centre is seen as a crucial actor in community, organizational, and regional sustainability. Maintain and establish close relationships with University groups.
  • Monitor Environmental Design issues and forces on a continuing basis in order to be in a position to conduct research.
  • Develop and deliver leading edge professional development and community oriented training.
  • Develop and maintain strategic alliances with other University groups, government departments, as well as organizations.
  • Continue to develop a profile which will ensure ongoing community support for its activities and in turn community support for University funding.
  • Continue to develop leading edge products which will support Centre activities.


Centre Roles

RESEARCH
The Centre through its Director and Advisory Board will seek to provide opportunities for Faculty wide interdisciplinary and collaborative work.

Prospective areas of research activity will and could include:

  • interdisciplinary problem solving processes and skills
  • community design
  • Community economic development
  • cultural resource planning and management
  • CAD/GIS
  • impact asimpact
  • ecosystem and natural environment Planning and management
  • sustainable development planning and management
  • international delopment
  • information technologies
  • product design

TRAINING
The Centre's long history with the Certificate in Heritage Resource Management as well as other initiatives provide a solid basis for continued involvement in training initiatives. The Centre has twelve years of experience in delivering courses on non University sites. Training opportunities are significant in light of government cutbacks. As in the past, this training role will be carried out by EVDS faculty, other University experts, as well as outside resource people. The nature of these activities will include:

  • professional development courses
  • ongoing academic responsibility for the Certificate in Heritage Resource Management
  • the delivery of programs in community and aboriginal tourism planning and development
  • community based courses
  • contract course design and delivery
  • development of distance and multi-media packages usually in partnership with other groups

OUTREACH
A crucial dimension of the Centre's benefit to the community as well as to the Faculty and the University is in the area of outreach. Opportunities for the application and development of knowledge and practice as well as enhanced opportunities for communities and organizations may be achieved through outreach.

PROJECT ADMINISTRATION
The Centre has developed significant experience in project administration. The CUC.AIT.PP and HRIP projects are substantial initiatives. The CUC.AIT.PP expends over $1.5 million a year and over the past twelve years the Centre has administered well over $20m. The nature of the administrative roles will include:

  • contract administration and liaison with University contract signing authorities
  • budget control
  • fund acounting
  • hiring/secondments

INFORMATION DISSEMINATION
The Centre has always seen information dissemination as an essential role. It has assumed this role in a number of ways and with a wider mandate this experience would be further developed. The nature of this role will include:

  • data bases
  • project reports
  • newsletters
  • briefing notes
  • bibliographies
  • occasional papers
  • research reports
