Who are the people in our neighbourhood?
Obtain demographic information from the most recent census within the community.  Especially important is data on age distribution, education level, household incomes, and ethnicity.

Seek information from the neighbourhood itself.  Take time to speak with community members of all ages to discover their concerns, values, and lifestyles.  A great way to obtain information is to spend an afternoon in the commercial district – visit the local deli, bakery, café, or pub in an effort to learn more about the people involved.  Identify key members of the community, namely those who have either relevant technical or interpersonal skills, and those who are influential decision-makers.  However, be aware of community politics – you might be better off involving an independent member of the neighbourhood rather than the president of the community association if the independent member is more respected.
