Thousands of alumni, students, faculty and staff celebrated in style at KICKOFF.07, a back-to-school bash for the U of C community that launched with a pep rally for the Dinos on Friday, Sept. 7 and continued through Saturday, culminating in the Dinos' passionate, but ultimately disappointing, 27-13 loss to the U of S Huskies at McMahon Stadium. The event drew almost 4,000 enthusiastic supporters each day.

Alumna funds endowed award for women's soccerFormer Dinos Women's soccer star Kathy Ranheim, BSc'91, has funded an award in her name in support of the women's soccer team. The award will be available to any returning full-time student on the women's soccer team who has maintained a satisfactory academic standing in the previous fall and winter sessions, or to incoming students with an admission average of at least 80 percent. Ranheim was a member of the first U of C intercollegiate women's soccer team and a four-time Canada West all-star. |

Redwood Meadows-based artist Dale Auger, BEd'92, MA'96, PhD'99, and daughter Neepin were profiled in a special Discovery Alberta supplement of the Calgary Herald.
Dr. Lyle Gross, MD'79, an adjunct professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at UBC, was in India earlier this year conducting workshops and delivering lectures. He learned of a local man who had suffered a spinal injury and offered to pay for the operation, reported the Lhudiana (India) Tribune.

More spaces for MD, Nursing studentsThe U of C has boosted the number of student spaces for medical doctors and nurses thanks to a Province of Alberta increase in funding for educating health care professionals. Starting this school year, the Faculty of Medicine can accommodate 10 more MD students annually, expanding the first-year class size to 135 students. Faculty of Nursing received funding to boost its admissions by two PhD students, seven master's students and six BN students in 07/08, with further increases the following year. |

For the first time in U of C history, an evening will be dedicated to honouring the success of women graduates who have made a difference all over the world and in a variety of fields. On October 18, the first anniversary of the opening of the new Women's Resource Centre (WRC), the WRC will host a gala evening supported by the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Alumni Association and many others. Highlights include an awards ceremony for a special alumnus, remarks from entrepreneur Eveline Charles, live performances of women's dance, music, theatre, and a silent auction of women's art. 2007 Peter Craigie Memorial LectureThe Faculty of Humanities and Department of Religious Studies brings Robin Margaret Jensen to Calgary to deliver the 2007 Peter Craigie Memorial Lecture on Monday, Oct. 22 in the Rozsa Centre at 7:30 pm. Jensen, a leading scholar in theology and the arts, gives a talk entitled "The Face of Christ: The Visible Image of the Invisible God". She looks at why, although the four canonical Gospels omit any physical description of Jesus, artists have imaged him in ways that are surprisingly consistent through the centuries. The conference will feature three keynotes: Dr. John DeMartini, one of the teachers of "The Secret," Roxanne Kielburger with Free the Children and co-founder of Leaders Today, and breast cancer survivor Dr. Marla Shapiro of Balance: Television for Living Well.
