A Library of the Future Slated for U of C Campus
The U of C’s 40th anniversary will have a lasting
effect on Calgary through a gift to the community—the
Campus Calgary Digital Library. On March 31, the eve of the
anniversary, ground will be broken on a building that will
lead the way in the future of learning. Slated to open in
2008, the $113-million CCDL is a partnership with other post-secondary
institutions in Calgary and the surrounding area, and it
will be open to all of their students as well. “The
CCDL will change forever how post-secondary students access
information,” says
U of C President Harvey Weingarten. “In addition to
providing students access to more extensive information collections,
this complex will also enhance a student’s ability
to collaborate with peers, share ideas, and access expert
help.”
The groundbreaking event is open all Calgarians. It begins
at 10:30 am, March 31, in the tent behind the McKimmie Library
Tower. To attend, RSVP by March 27 to uofthefuture@ucalgary.ca

Diabetics May Soon Be Free from Insulin Injections
Freedom from insulin injections and the myriad of health
problems related to type 1 diabetes is closer to becoming
reality, thanks to University of Calgary researchers.
Led by Leo Behie, they are developing the first bioreactor
procedures to grow pancreatic cells in their laboratory.
This opens the door to the possibility of providing a
steady supply of insulin-producing cells that can be transplanted
into patients affected by this serious disease.

Spaces Designed By and For Students
The first of 40 student spaces being renovated on campus
is under construction in the Social Sciences building. Take
Your Place, the 40th anniversary project being spearheaded
by Sheila O’Brien, the special advisor to the president
on student life, is creating 40 refurbished spaces for students
to study, meet, or just hang out. O’Brien is also leading
fundraising efforts for the project, along with alumna Stephanie
Felesky. “Clearly, we needed to address this issue
right,” says O’Brien. “Take Your Place
will develop some really lovely and functional spaces where
students can meet, study, debate, and connect with their
grownup cohort.”

Flames Fans Treated to Game in Edmonton
It was the quickest sell-out to an alumni function ever.
More than 100 Edmonton alumni and U of C friends snapped up
tickets for the March 16 showdown between their Calgary Flames
and the Edmonton Oilers. Alumni donned red and faced call-outs
from Oiler fans to gather as a group to cheer on the Flames.
Their team may have lost the battle that night, but alumni
response was so positive to the event, which included a pre-game
reception, that they can be assured the U of C will be there
when there’s another showdown.

He shoots, he scores: Robin Wyss turns hockey into charity
An opportunity to hobnob with celebrities and hockey stars,
and doing it in the name of charity. That’s all in a
day’s work for Robin Wyss, BA’79, who has been
organizing NHL alumni and celebrity hockey games since 1995.
The All Stars Group, of which Wyss is a partner, teams former
NHL players such as Ron Duguay and Joel Otto with celebrities
like Denis Leary, Dave Coulier and Alan Thicke. The famous
names mingle to make the teams, but the winners in the end
are the various charities they’re playing for.

The U of C will provide a six-month
training program to Sudanese physicians, so they can return
to the war-torn country and help meet the medical needs
necessary there. These physicians are part of a group of
more than 600 children who were sent to Cuba in the mid-1980s
to escape ongoing war and violence in their country. The
goal was for these children to earn an education with the
hope they would one day return to Sudan and become leaders
in the community.
