Emissions Must Be Reduced More than Thought
If the world is serious about halting global warming then
it will have to reduce carbon emissions over the next century
by as much as 230 billion tonnes more than previously thought,
according to Damon Matthews, a post-doctoral fellow in
the University of Calgary’s Department of Geography.
Matthews’ research shows how much future emissions
need to be reduced so as to allow for the possibility of
adverse effects of climate changes on natural carbon sinks.

New Student Spots Through Energy Coalition
More than 1,500 new spots will be available for students at
the U of C and SAIT because of a partnership between the
two schools to create a new energy coalition. The coalition
is an unprecedented alignment of post-secondaries designed
to meet the needs of the business community on an urgent provincial
and national issue—a critical
shortage of skilled workers. “This coalition between the U of
C and SAIT aligns the unique strengths and abilities of our
institutions to ensure Alberta’s energy industry will get the
best skilled workforce it needs,” said Irene Lewis, President

Card Gives Calgarians Savings at U of C
Plays. Dino games. Lectures by famous names like Oliver
Sacks. Events like this happen at the University of Calgary
all the time and there’s now a way for all Calgarians
to get better access to them. On December 1, the U of C
is launching its U-Connect card—a card that gives
holders access to special offers and discounts to events,
programs and services at the University of Calgary. The
cards are priced at $25 each, but when used to its full
capacity, cardholders will save well over $1,000. “We
hope to engage neighbouring communities to come and discover
all that we have to offer on campus, from dramatic and
music performances to health and lifestyle services,” says
Cheryl McCarthy, associate director of community relations.

Senate and Chancellor Changes
The U of C Senate is movin’ and shakin’ these
days. They’ve created a new website, which is easier
for senators, staffers, and the community alike to navigate.
And their search has started for a new chancellor. William
Warren’s term
as chancellor expires in 2006, so the search is on for a new “ultimate
volunteer.” You can go to the Senate’s new website
to find out more: www.senate.ucalgary.ca.

Helping Hands: Shirley Purves is building a stronger community,
one person at a time
"It made my heart throb,” says Shirley Purves
(BN’97)

The young woman came to Aspen a few years ago. She had suffered
