Scores New Market Information Centre
Business students at U of C now have access to top-of-the-line financial resources
thanks to the new N. Murray Edwards Market Information Centre, recently unveiled
in its Scurfield Hall home. The centre consists of a plasma screen, graphical
stock ticker, data wall, and a Reuter’s data station in the business
library. It is the only one in a Western Canadian university to offer both
Reuter’s and Bloomberg financial services.

Takes a Quantum Leap
Cowtown will soon become home to one of the world’s elite research
institutes with the creation of a unique multidisciplinary institute
that will advance the frontiers of quantum information science. Only
a few quantum institutes of this calibre exist in the world. The
new institute will eventually link research in computer science,
theoretical and experimental physics, chemistry, mathematics, and
electrical engineering.

C Athletes Dominate Across Canada
In 2003/04, the U of C had more athletes recognized as Canadian
University Sports Players of the Year than any other university
in the country,
with four being honoured. Joanna Niemczewska (women’s volleyball),
Erin Gammel (women’s swimming), Jessica Zelinka (women’s
track and field), and Chad Murray (men’s swimming) were
the four outstanding athletes. Niemczewska and Murray were also
named
U of C’s Female and Males Athletes of the Year respectively.

Award Recipients Chosen
Kelly-Marie
Murphy, one of Canada’s leading composers, and Laura
Lucier, a flight controller for the Canadian Space Agency
in Houston, are the two most recent remarkable alumni to
be chosen for awards through the University of Calgary
Alumni Association.
Murphy
will receive the Association's 21st Distinguished Alumni
Award, and Lucier will be given the Graduate Of the Last
Decade (GOLD) Award—an honour that was first awarded
in 2003. Both recipients will be honoured at an event
in the fall.

Adventurer to Speak to Alumni
Brian Keating, Head of Conservation Outreach at the Calgary Zoo, will be the
keynote speaker at this year’s Alumni Association AGM on May 26. After
a brief business meeting, Keating—who has led some 50 expeditions to remote
locations worldwide and who returned earlier this year from his fourth of six
planned voyages to the Antarctic—will give an account and illustration
of the brilliant leadership of Ernest Shackleton, an early 20th-century explorer
who lead a failed Antarctic expedition but remarkably returned without a single
loss of life. |

the Chinese diet—and the outbreak of SARS (Severe
Acute Respiratory Syndrome) last year in China. This
