Everything you need to know about legal cannabis on campus

Have questions? We have answers.

As of October 17, cannabis will be legal to purchase and consume in Canada. The Government of Canada has left it up to municipalities to decide what that will look like for citizens. The University of Calgary’s cannabis policy aligns with the City of Calgary’s by-laws.

Can I smoke cannabis on campus?

Short answer – no. Only if you have a medical licence can you use cannabis in by-law restricted smoking areas, such as five metres away from building entrances.

Where is it legal to consume?

Basically, only on your private property, but not in your car. If you rent your home, check with your landlord for your building’s policy. If you live in residence, there is a no smoking policy.

Other things to keep in mind

Anyone 18 and over will be able to purchase and carry up to 30 grams at a time from a licensed retailer. Edibles won’t be legal to purchase. Driving under the influence is illegal - wait a few hours before getting behind the wheel, or use a designated driver.

Big changes for Canada, but recreational cannabis use is still prohibited on campus.
