Using My Home Computer to Work Remotely

If you are using your own computer to do work from home, you need to ensure that your computer is protected against virus attacks. Here are some high level steps that you should consider first.

Note: Even though you are using your home computer to work from home, it is always a good practice to keep your "work computer name" handy in case you end up needing it if you send a request to IT.

Now that your computer is ready to be used for work, here are some guidelines on IT services you might need. Many university applications and services can be accessed remotely without the need for a special IT access. Access through the internet is all you need to reach most applications in the My UCalgary portal. Find a list of applications that do not require special access below.

In some situations, such as getting access to files stored on the UCalgary network, you will need access to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection. "General VPN" access provides the majority of people with all they need to do their work from home. Here are some guidelines to follow:

No VPN required

If you need to access any of the applications listed below, you can use your home WiFi/Ethernet connection and you are set to go.

The following applications and services DO NOT require VPN to be accessed from home:

  • Peoplesoft
  • O365 suite (Email, OneDrive, etc)
  • SharePoint
  • ServiceNow
  • Adobe Connect
  • D2L
  • IT Account and eID account creation and management
  • Drupal (production)
  • Citrix
  • RMS
  • Desk voicemail

General VPN required

You will need General VPN access if you want to access your network files and other applications not listed under No VPN required.

The following applications and services DO require GENERAL VPN to be accessed from home:

  • Share Drives
  • Printing
  • Drupal (not production)

The VPN software needs to be downloaded to your computer. For instructions, use the link below.
