Alistair Bath
Dr. Alistair Bath is currently an associate professor within
the Department of Geography at Memorial University in
Newfoundland, Canada where he teaches natural resource management
issues, parks and protected areas planning, conflict resolution
and public involvement, usually in the context of wildliife and
large carnivore issues. As an adjunct professor at the technical
University of Munich in the international sustainable resource
management program, Alistair routinely teaches human dimensions
courses in Germany and also in a graduate conservation biology
program at La Sapienza in Rome, Italy.
He currently is a member of the IUCN Large Carnivore Initiative
for Europe Species Group and has conducted numerous research
projects throughout Europe focused on human dimensions in wolf,
brown bear and lynx management issues. Dr. Bath actively applies
the human dimensions facilitated workshop approach which he has
developed, and has implemented it in Croatia to get diverse
interest groups to reach consensus on wolf and lynx management
plans.
More recently in Bulgaria Alistair completed a brown bear
management plan and has just begun a planning process to lead
toward a wolf management plan working with various interest
groups. In Canada, Dr. Bath has worked on a variety of projects
with Parks Canada on wildlife issues and local involvement of
community residents. In addition, he was involved with the USA
National Park Service conducting research regarding the
reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone National Park and the
development of carnivore conservation areas in Canada.
Currently, Dr. Bath has projects examining resident attitudes
toward wolves and brown bears in Abruzzzo, Lazio et Molise
National Park in Italy and working with local community residents
in establishing a protected area in Armenia. When Alistair does
find some spare time, you may see him on the tennis court!
