Group programs

Build the skills you need to deal with the concerns you're having through our group programs. Groups are facilitated by psychologists and social workers from the mental health team. For fall 2020, all groups will be offered virtually.

Our group programs are available to students only. 

Are you dealing with higher than usual stress or anxiety? Register for one of our group programs created to give you the skills to help get them under control.

  1. Anxiety Management

    Are you having a hard time dealing with feeling anxious, nervous, fear, or discomfort?

    Learn ways to change behaviours that can contribute to feeling anxious in this four-week program.

  2. Making connections: Overcoming social anxiety - By referral

    Do you want to overcome social anxiety that's interfering with your ability to make social connections?

    Learn ways to manage social anxiety in this four-week program (by referral only).

  3. Strategies for Exam Anxiety

    Is anxiety and fear impacting your test performance?

    Learn skills to increase confidence and improve test writing performance in this three-week program.

  4. Roots of Resiliency

    ( *Not Offered During COVID-19 Virtual Services)

    Are you experiencing mild to moderate stress, anxiety or depression?

    Learn from professionals to improve your resilience and personal wellness, while earning an honorarium, in this seven-week program.

Master your mood and take charge of your emotional well-being with group programs designed to help you make positive changes to your thinking and behaviours.

  1. Mastering your mood

    Are you feeling sad, depressed or hopeless? Have you lost interest in things you used to enjoy? Do you have negative thoughts about yourself and your future that make taking action hard?

    Learn ways to change thinking patterns that can negatively impact your mood in this five-week program.

  2. Happiness Basics

    Do you want to learn how to maintain or enhance your current level of happiness? 

    Increase your happiness using principles from positive psychology in this four-week program. 

    Tuesdays from 2:00 - 4:00pm (January 19, January 26, February 2, February 9)

  3. Mindfulness

    Are you finding it difficult to manage stress or emotions and want to learn a practice to help manage those feelings?

    Learn about the practice and participate in guided meditation on Wednesdays via Zoom in this five-week program.

Be as successful as possible in grad school with these programs designed to help you build the skills and resilience you need for this time in your academic career. 

  1. Anxiety Management

    Are you having a hard time dealing with feeling anxious, nervous, fear, or discomfort?

    Learn ways to change behaviours that can contribute to feeling anxious in this four-week program.

  2. Equipping Yourself for Success

    Are you a graduate student? Is time slipping away from you or are you struggling to gain momentum to finish your dissertation?

    Learn skills to help you succeed in grad school in this series of 90-minute sessions. 

  3. Survive and Thrive in Grad School 

    Do you feel like you're "surviving" grad school, and want to know what it feels like to "thrive"?

    Join other graduate students in a supportive, confidential environment where you can discuss things impacting you. We'll cover stress management, self-care, motivation and goal setting, managing conflict, managing the job search, and more.


Managing Stress and Isolation in a Pandemic

Previously titled: Managing Anxiety and Intense Emotions

Join other students for a 5-week group to feel connected and learn ways to cope with the stress of being a student during the pandemic.

Sessions available:

  • Tuesdays, starting Jan. 12, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.
  • Wednesdays, starting Jan. 13, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.

Once you register, we will contact you to determine your eligibility and find a time that works for you.


Eligibility Criteria: This group is open to participants who are UCalgary students, under the age of 30, and currently reside in Alberta.
