New, secure parking cage opens for campus cyclists

Cyclists rejoice! If you’ve been clamoring for a safe, secure space on campus to store your wheels, worry no more.

A roofed and caged 54 bike-capacity bicycle rack is now open in the Arts Parkade at the University of Calgary. Use of the bicycle storage will be free until June 30. Access cards are required and are available at the Parking and Transportation Services office, located near McMahon stadium.

The project, a joint effort between the Office of the University Architect and Parking and Transportation Services, aims to support more sustainable means of commuting to and from campus.

“This was an extremely significant and timely project for us,” said Susan Austen, associate director, Parking and Transportation Services at the University of Calgary. “With the need to support an active lifestyle, it was important to further support sustainable means of arriving on campus.”

Constructed in the fall of 2013, the secure bike compound is located in the southeast corner of the Arts Parkade and accessed from a pedestrian entrance on the east side.   

Aside from reducing noise and air pollution, biking can be a great way to incorporate physical activity into your daily commute.

If you would like to try cycling, but don't own a bike, you can rent one from the university’s Outdoor Centre.

The new bike storage is part of the university’s long-term strategic plans to support more sustainable transportation means, which has seen the addition of parking stalls for car2go, the on-campus and citywide car share program, as well as preferred rates and parking stalls for those who car pool to campus.   

The university plans to add an additional parking cage this summer at the Foothills campus.
