UNS Peer Mentorship

The Undergraduate Nursing Society’s Peer Mentorship Program (UNSPMP)

This program connects first-year nursing students to experienced and knowledgeable peer mentors who can help them get acclimated socially and academically within the Faculty of Nursing. Our mission is to support and guide first-year students through the academic demands of the BNAT/BNRT programs, so that they can experience a smooth and easy transition. Enhanced student learning, personal growth, and the promotion of teaching innovations and involvement are all expected outcomes from the program. Peer mentors will be able to pass onto their mentorship group experiences and challenges of a particular nursing course that they have succeeded.

Peer mentors will check with their mentorship group as to how well the first-year students are managing and whether there are questions that can be answered or directed to other resources within the university. If a problem occurs students will be referred to academic advising or counseling.

The goal of the program is to make first year nursing students feel more comfortable in an academic and social environment, adjust to academic demands, become self-sufficient, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
