What to Expect When Starting Clinical

The first clinical practicum, Nursing 209 runs one day shift each week with two lab days at the university for the winter semester of first year (BNRT program).  Placements for this practicum are primarily acute care medical and surgical units.  For this clinical, you are exposed to the hospital and the nursing role in patient care.  Students will shadow RNs, work together to perform patient care, and take on patient care of their own.

Some things you will be exposed to in Nursing 209:

bullet Providing personal care patients, including bed baths, tub baths and/or showers
bullet Making beds and walking or turning patients
bullet Administering medication , taking into consideration the 5 rights and 3 checks.  Possible routes of medication administration include PO, SC and IM routes
bullet Learning to perform simple dressing changes
bullet Learning to perform sterile urethral catheterizations on male and female patients
