"There are
very few foreign studies regarding death and medical attention
of persons who, as a result of suspected or presumed severe
alcohol intoxication have been held in custody because they
represent a danger to others, or to protect them from themselves
when in a helpless condition" (Segest, 1987, p. 1695).
"It was
presumed that this study covered all of the deaths in custody
in Denmark from 1981-1985. In Denmark these persons are
incarcerated in jail cells. Medical attention is only given
when deemed necessary by the police. Deaths that occur in
custody are often the subject of considerable newspaper
comment as well as political attention. A white paper considered
the possibility of reducing the duty of the police in favor
of increased medical and social care" (Segest, 1987
p. 1695).

"The main
aim of this review was to examine the cause of death of
psychiatric inpatients, as reported in death certificates
over two decades" (Salib, 1998, p. 625).
"Dementia
which was the recorded clinical diagnosis in 78% of the
deceased was recorded in only 31% of the death certificates,
while other psychiatric disorders (22% of all deceased)
appeared in only 2% of certificates. Autopsy appears to
have very little or no value in improving the quality of
death certificates in psychiatry" (Salib, 1998, p.
624).
"Death
certificates despite their inadequacies remain one of the
most commonly used sources of data for the estimation of
the prevalence of most diseases. Morbidity and mortality
statistics that arise from death certificates are seriously
flawed mainly because of the omission of important materials"
(O'Sullivan, 1996; Salib, 1998, p. 624).
"Inadequate
reporting of cause of death leads to serious inaccuracies.
Clinicians should be more aware of the importance of recording
dementia on the death certificates" (Salib, 1998, p.
628).
