TOPIC
Development
of a Financial Sustainability Model for a Solid Waste Management Facility
Abstract:
The use of scientifically based management
science tools to address solid waste management issues dates back to the early
1960s. Currently more and more researchers continue to use and develop these operations research (OR) tools in conjunction with
decision support system (DSS) approaches. This creates more powerful models to
address the increasing complexity of modern solid waste management systems.
This presentation discusses the application of the analytical hierarchy process
(AHP) to address the priority ranking for a number of landfill engineering
design and operating objectives in developing and developed countries. In
conjunction with Excel’s Monte Carlo simulation program, a predictive financial
tool is presented that can be used to determine the viability of specific
landfill design and operating practices over the long term. The model
prioritizes which design and / or operating parameters need to be addressed for
a particular situation. Parameters are ranked based on the economic,
environmental, health and safety, legislative and public perception components
related to the solid waste facilities design and operation.
