TOPIC
Comparing
Supply Chain Replenishment Policies Using Optimum-Seeking Simulation
Abstract:
The choice of replenishment policy in supply chains is
a challenging and important problem. The available
studies have still some contradictions and problems of comparing these
policies. The important problems addressed are setting of decision variables
and multiple performance measures. The work
reported in this presentation is part of a larger study aiming to perform a
rigorous and objective comparison of supply chain replenishment policies. A hypothetical single-stage supply chain
system, facing time-varying demand, is modelled, and experiments are conducted
using discrete-event simulation to predict how each replenishment policy
performs. The optimum-seeking simulation methodology is used to determine
“optimal” control parameter settings for each policy, and the performance of
the system under each policy (with optimal parameter settings) is compared. The two primary performance measures of
interest are average total inventory and customer service level. The control
parameters whose values are being determined are: lot size and reorder point
(for the reorder point system); and Kanban size and the number of containers
(for the Kanban system). In each set of optimum-seeking simulation trials, the
objective is to minimize the average total inventory subject to a specified
lower limit on the customer service level.
