TOPIC

An Optimization System for Heavy Oil Supply Allocation and Strategic Planning
Abstract:

The process of hauling and allocating emulsion (tank treated and untreated), sour heavy oil and produced water at heavy oil production sites to their receiving facilities (e.g. batteries or disposal sites) involve a series of interrelated decisions and activities with associated costs of millions of dollars for major heavy oil producing companies. In majority of cases the load planning and pairing of source/destinations is mainly based on short term operational considerations which may not necessarily optimize the overall financial performance for the companies. Improvements in allocation plans by utilizing optimization and decision support tools will potentially translate into significant cost savings estimated at 5-15% depending on the current condition of the process.

In this presentation we demonstrate a recently developed and implemented optimization system used for generating load allocation plans that are fundamentally driven by financial performance (e.g. netbacks, transportation fees, fuel and unit configuration charges, facility operating costs, tank treatment costs, etc.) while meeting the operational requirements. In addition, this application is used for conducting impact analysis and for re-active and strategic planning purposes. This system can handle thousands of wells and features a user friendly interface, data import/export facility and custom reporting.

About the Speaker:

Mina Rahnama has been involved with development and implementation of numerous Optimization/Decision Support systems for major Oil and Gas and Transportation companies since 1987.  In the energy sector, these systems pertain to different oil and gas products (natural gas, crude, heavy oil) and cover a broad spectrum including Operations, Supply Management, Marketing /Distribution, Logistics and Debt Management.  Other projects include business process assessments, project management and business systems analysis, leading to the development and implementation of a number of custom applications in client/server and web based environments.

Mina Rahnama holds a Ph.D. in Operations Research. She is the Principal of Minacor Management Consulting Inc. Clients include Gibson Energy, Baytex Energy, Husky Energy, Petro-Canada, Amoco Canada, CP Rail, TCPL.

Mina’s interests include traveling, hiking, reading, movies and she has a strong commitment to advocacy for individuals with special needs.
