For people living with skin conditions, like contact dermatitis, it can be difficult to find the right skincare products. It’s even harder to see a medical specialist who can identify the cosmetic ingredients they should be avoiding in the first place. At UCalgary, three dermatology residents decided to create a solution and All Skin was formed. All Skin’s home patch test measures a person’s skin sensitivity to common cosmetic ingredients and provides a list of recommended products from a database of more than 20,000 personal care and cosmetic products.

With wait times for dermatologist evaluation sometimes as long as two years, All Skin helps users find products best suited to their skin from the comfort of their own home using its patch test and mobile app. Dr. Ryan Lewinson, Dr. Isabelle Vallerand and Dr. Matthew Hughes took a data-driven approach to develop the AI-enabled app and turned to programs like Creative Destruction Lab-Rockies and UCeed to help commercialize their technology. “There’s an incredible ecosystem to support startups here, and once we stepped foot inside, everything seemed to ramp up," says Dr. Lewinson.

The company is now doing a soft launch of the product to continue testing and make refinements before scaling to a greater market. As a part of the startup community on UCalgary’s campus, the company is looking forward to seeing its product reach more people across the community and make lives easier for both patients and physicians.

All Skin has received investment from UCeed, a venture philanthropy fund accelerating UCalgary and community-based startup companies to advance problem-solving research, create jobs and fuel the economy. A key program in the UCalgary innovation ecosystem, UCeed bridges the gap between innovation, demonstration and commercialization, and is managed by UCalgary’s knowledge-transfer and business incubator, Innovate Calgary.

UCeed Health Fund is supported by the generosity of the River Fund at the Calgary Foundation and its mission to build a healthy and vibrant community where everyone belongs.
