About:

Calgary Legal Guidance provides legal information, advice, and advocacy to disadvantaged Calgarians who would not otherwise have access to legal services.

Services:

  • Legal information and advice on:

    • Family issues such as separation/divorce, custody and access, and child support

    • Criminal issues such as theft, mischief, fraud, and non-domestic assault

    • Civil issues such as small claims, debt, landlord/tenant, and employment issues

    • Orders of protection such as restraining orders

    • Getting identification documents if you have lost them

    • Social benefit issues such as Alberta Works, AISH, Employment Insurance benefits, and Canada Pension Plan benefits

  • Domestic Violence Legal Intervention: Support includes crises counselling, follow-up for victim, pre-trial preparation and court support.
  • Legal Clinics: Free and confidential legal advice at evening clinics and outreach clinics to low income Calgarians who do not qualify for Legal Aid and those facing cultural, financial or barriers.

  • Do Your Own Divorce Clinics: Uncontested divorce completion for low costs.

  • Dial-A-Law is a free information service that provides pre-recorded legal information from a touch tone phone 24 hours per day.

  • Education: workshops and presentations in the community on a variety of legal topics such as: family law, wills and estates, landlord and tenant, the court ordered protection programs provided by staff and volunteer lawyers.

  • The Social Benefits Advocacy Program is available to assist low-income clients experiencing difficulty with applying for and maintaining social benefits such as Alberta Works, AISH, EI and CPP Disability.

  • The Homeless Outreach Program provides free legal assistance for homeless, or those at-risk of becoming homeless.

  • The Immigration Law Project: Free legal advice assisting in refugee protection, residence, work permits, visas and family sponsorship issues.
