Biography

My name is Muhammad Ansari and I am a student going into my 4th year of mechanical engineering, minoring in biomedical engineering. I am really interested in using my engineering competencies to drive change in the field of medicine, more specifically neuroscience. Volunteering at the hospital, I have found that a lot of patients feel like their concerns are not heard in a lot of treatments and rehabilitation they do and I wanted to take part in developing patient-centred approaches to solve this. To facilitate this, I have been a research student for the past two years in neuroscience-based labs, initially doing medical imaging research and now taking on a role which focuses on using a novel technology, brain-computer interfaces to create opportunities in sports for those with cerebral palsy. Beyond this, I also work to support initiatives that helps local communities and on a larger scale Canada itself through engineering as I find that a lot of current engineering projects have missed this. To do this, I launched the University of Calgary’s first biomedical engineering design team which focuses on working with biomedical professionals and community members to solve problems they face and further work with the Canadian Blood Services to help recruit donors. Beyond school and my extracurriculars, I love playing soccer, I am a huge Chelsea fan (Chelsea is a team that plays in England) and I like biking when the weather is nice.
