Biography
“With confidence, you have won before you have started.” - Marcus Garvey
Douye was born in Lagos, Nigeria and is an engaged scholar passionate about newcomer health, educational equity and stories about the African Diaspora. Douye has been recognized locally and nationally for his academic excellence and community-oriented work. In the UCalgary community, Douye is engaged in various initiatives related to his passions. At the core of Douye’s academic philosophy is that spaces must be created that not only include but promote the flourishing of those who often feel sidelined and underrepresented. Through funding from the faculty, he has been part of projects that address mental health disparities in immigrant, refugee and newcomer generations. He has also acted as an executive for the Canadian Organization for Undergraduate Health Research to work on increasing diversity in the research ecosystem. His current research focuses on elucidating disparities that affect Black and racialized communities. Douye looks forward to a career rooted in public service and hopes to infuse all his passions into his life’s work. He hopes the Scholars Academy Program will create a community to help him grow as a leader. Outside of his academic interests, he loves reading, binging Netflix shows and spending time with friends and family.
