Welcome Back Series
For second and upper-year students who spent their first year of university working remotely, the Welcome Back Series is your opportunity to connect with campus, your peers and ideas through fun in-person and online activities.
Welcome Back video
Learning about where everything lives on campus can take some time, so that's why we made this short video introduction to get you started. Here,
Jessica will talk about some of the popular places to eat and hang out and where key student services live within MacEwan Student Centre.
We'll also highlight some of the things that you can look forward to throughout the next few months, including events, workshops and more.
Events and workshops
Whether you're new to main campus or returning after a yearlong hiatus, we've created the Welcome Back Series of events to get you acquainted with your surroundings. Be sure to register for events that you're interested in.
Welcome Back Panel
This panel will consist of 4 upper year students or alumni who have graduated within the last year from the University of Calgary. Panelists from diverse backgrounds will be selected to represent several student perspectives. The topic of the panel will focus on their student experiences and strategies for student success in returning to campus.
Returning to People Workshop
This workshop will focus on helping students reintegrate back into in-person interactions on campus by addressing strategies on how to approach people at different comfortability levels with in-person activities, acknowledge wellness challenges over the past year, and conclude with breakout room group activities for students to develop their own strategies for success with peers.
Mental Health and U
This session will aim to communicate mental health resources at UCalgary, debunk common misconceptions about mental health services, and talk about mental health and well-being. Incorporating the involvement of student volunteers and their stories, the session aims to normalize potential challenges to mental health as a student, while communicating that support is available. The session will share information on accessing resources and opportunities for engagement to enhance connection to the campus community.
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Presentation
An introductory guide that provides a starting point to learn about EDI in the UCalgary setting. Provides a broad overview of EDI issues and engagement practices in the university community.
Unwind social event
Offering students the chance to get together and find a community on campus, Unwind presents various social activities for students to connect with their peers. Two Unwind events will be hosted within the Welcome Back Series, an in-person session and an online session. Register for the Speed Friend Making session or feel free to drop-in to the in-person Unwind Scavenger Hunt.
A series of sessions hosted throughout September by multiple offices as an extension of Fall Orientation. Many sessions will be recurring events from the Summer Series and standard academic year events hosted annually. The event themes are: Getting Involved, Academics, and Career Development.
Consent/Sexual Violence Presentation
An introductory guide on the umbrella term, sexual violence, and extended topics. Participants will discuss and define sexual violence and how the many forms are connected and upheld via unchallenged beliefs and attitudes.
A virtual resource fair features essential campus services. Students will visit each virtual table and learn about the resources and offerings within these offices.
