The UCalgary International Student Services team looks forward to welcoming new international students each fall and winter term.

Fall (September) 2020

Due to the unique circumstances for fall 2020, all international student orientation programming will take place remotely. Please stay informed on Covid-related updates:

Important Dates:

  • Residence Orientation: if you are living on-campus, visit the Residence Services website for details
  • Orientation Events: Sept. 1 – 4 (scroll down for specific information)
  • Block Week Classes: Aug. 31-Sept. 4, 2020. You only need to attend if you're registered in a "block week course". 
  • Labour Day: Monday, Sept. 7. University closed; no classes. 
  • First Day of Fall Term Classes: Tuesday, Sept. 8. Check your start date and course schedule through your Student Centre (my.ucalgary.ca)

New International Student Orientation Components

International Student Services (ISS) provides orientation programming for international students to help provide a smooth transition to the start of your studies at the University of Calgary. For fall 2020, there are several important components for students starting their studies in Calgary or remotely.

All newly-admitted students will receive an email from International Student Services (ISS) when registration for international student orientation opens.

ISS provides several helpful information sessions to help as you prepare to start your studies at UCalgary. Check back for new updates. Please note you must register for each session you are interested in attending remotely in order to receive the access link.

International Student Services (ISS) has compiled some orientation materials and resources specifically for new international students starting in fall 2020. These materials include helpful resources and short videos related to:

  • Canadian Immigration & Working in Canada

  • Meeting Other Students & Finding Community
  • Getting Settled in Calgary
  • And more!

We recommend you take some time to review these materials before attending our live panel sessions on Sept. 1 (international undergraduate and exchange students) or Sept. 2 (international graduate students).

International Student Services (ISS) will facilitate a live, remote question and answer panel with staff and student leaders from several UCalgary offices who work to support international students on topics such as immigration, work regulations for employment, Canadian classroom culture, getting settled in Calgary, and social programming for students and their families.

Connecting with other new international students is an important component of starting your studies at UCalgary! ISS is hosting remote New International Student Welcome Receptions—these will provide an opportunity to meet others, socialize, and start building community regardless of where you are located! You’ll also get a chance to learn more about different social events through other UCalgary offices.

  • International Undergraduate, Visiting, & Exchange Students: Wednesday, Sept. 2, noon – 1 p.m. MDT (on Zoom) 
  • Graduate International Students: Thursday, Sept. 3, 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. MDT (on Zoom)
  • Any new international students: Wednesday, Sept. 9, noon 1 pm MDT (on Zoom)

If you can’t attend the Live Remote Panel, we’ll post a recording and transcripts on this page for you to review. You’ll also be able to set up a meeting with an International Student Services advisor if needed to help answer questions about adapting to life as a UCalgary student.
