About USpeak

USpeak is a vibrant program for all language enthusiasts! When you submit your application, you’ll have the opportunity to join USpeak as a participant, where you can improve your language skills through practice, or as a USpeak Coach, where you can volunteer your time to support others in developing their language abilities. Whether you're looking to improve a new language or share your own, USpeak offers a welcoming space to connect, learn, and grow. You’ll have the chance to:

  • Practice and improve your skills in the language of your choice through informal conversation tables
  • Support others by sharing your knowledge and offering ongoing feedback and guidance
  • Connect with a community of students passionate in the same languages as you
  • Attend monthly social and language development events where you’ll meet other students who are interested in sharing languages
  • Earn a UCalgary Digital Badge for your participation

Time commitment:

  • Attend the USpeak Welcome event
  • Attend at least 4 conversation tables (1 per month, feel free to attend more!)
  • Submit mid-term check in form in the middle of the term
  • Submit final feedback form and final program reflection form at the end of the term
  • Attend USpeak Volunteer Training (Coaches Only)

If you have questions about the program, email uspeak@ucalgary.ca.

After you submit your application

You will be able to come to the USpeak Welcome event taking place towards the end of September. This is a fun opportunity to socialize with other students and language coaches. Language coach volunteers will be there to support you in creating a plan for your language journey this semester and to answer your questions.
