DS4Y Pathway Options

Pathway options allow participants to customize your DS4Y program.

Continuing Education has identified several pathways to complete the Digital Skills for Youth program with the University of Calgary. The options are all available through online learning, with classroom learning available in Calgary.

Our approach to the DS4Y program is intended to allow participants a customized and flexible program that will facilitate successful transition to your next role in the digital workforce. More information on the individual courses can be found on the Continuing Education website through Advanced Search.

Following the successful completion of digital skills training and internship, students will receive a certificate of completion for the Digital Skills for Youth Program with the University of Calgary.


Pathway 1 | Front End Web Development

Front End Web Development provides the essential knowledge and skills required to build the front-end of web pages and websites for personal or business purposes. Students will learn to code, speak the technical language and implement designs using HTML, CSS and JavaScript – a mix of programming and layout that powers the visuals and interactions in the web.

This pathway aligns with the Continuing Education Certificate in Front End Web Development. Individuals completing this pathway will receive two certificates: Certificate of Completion Digital Skills for Youth Program and the Continuing Education Certificate in Front End Web Development.

Pathway 2 | Computer Programming & IT Fundamentals

Regardless of the IT career path you choose, you will need some fundamental knowledge of computer programming, databases, networks, and development methodologies. This Certificate in IT Fundamentals provides a solid foundation of skills and knowledge that will allow you to progress to more advanced courses and programs of study.

Pathway 3 | Database Administration

Microsoft SQL Server is a powerful, enterprise class database platform that is designed to store and retrieve all types of data quickly and efficiently. It includes tools that allow for the rapid development of SQL program code, enterprise server administration and powerful, data-driven reports. Microsoft SQL Server is the backbone for thousands of industry leading software applications including Microsoft SharePoint and SAP. You will learn how to design, develop, administer and troubleshoot Microsoft SQL databases and servers.

This pathway aligns with the Continuing Education Certificate in Database Administration. Individuals completing this pathway will have taken 4 of 5 courses in the Database Administration Certificate and may register separately for the final course to receive the Continuing Education Certificate (fees will apply).

Pathway 4 | Business Intelligence and Analytics

Business Intelligence (BI) is the field of combining data, technology, business processes and analytics to optimize business decisions and drive success. BI has become a technological priority for organizations, and its tools, approaches and methods are quickly becoming valued skillsets. Turning your data into valuable information is no longer a luxury — it is a necessity for our ever-changing markets.

This pathway aligns with the Continuing Education Certificate in Business Intelligence and Analytics. Individuals completing this pathway will have taken 4 of 8 courses in the Business Intelligence and Analytics Certificate and may register separately for the final course to receive the Continuing Education Certificate (fees will apply).

Pathway 5 | Integrated Digital Media

Integrated Digital Media incorporates design principles along with tools, techniques and technologies to help students design, create, and publish a variety of digital media content for today's multi-platform electronic devices. This pathway will introduce you to a range of products in the Adobe Suite of softare that is widely used in industry to create a variety of graphics design materials.

Pathway 6 | Social Media

Today's economy requires an increasing number of individuals with knowledge of traditional media channels, social media, digital marketing and visual design. This program will introduce you to key aspects of social media marketing. Explore emerging technologies and best practices in the field. With its emphasis on theory and practices, this pathway will be of value to individuals contemplating a career change, new to the marketing field or eager to update and enhance their existing skills.
