How to activate Windows Speech Recognition: 

  1. Access Speech Recognition by opening the Control Panel > Speech Recognition. 

  2. If you have not previously used Speech Recognition, click Set up microphone. Headset microphones are recommended for best results when dictating into the computer.

  3. After setting up your microphone, click Take Speech Tutorial to learn the basics of speech recognition.

  4. If you find that your computer is not accurately recognizing your speech, at any time you can click Train your computer to understand you better in order to improve your recognition results.

  5. A list of additional commands can be accessed by clicking Open the Speech Reference Card.

Dictate in Word for Office 365

Word for Office 365 includes a Dictate feature that allows you to dictate your documents. 

This feature requires Office 365, which is free to download for UCalgary students.
