Introduction

The Bachelor of Education program at the University of Calgary recognizes that teaching is one of the most important professions in society. Becoming a teacher requires strong preparation, with the acquisition of specific subject matter knowledge, the development of pedagogical skills, and the ability to make good judgments in practice.

In our program, an understanding of the complex qualities of teaching are developed through five "dimensions of engaged inquiry":

  • In learning about learning;
  • With/in specializations;
  • With contemporary contexts;
  • With/in teaching and learning communities and;
  • In ethical action.

The Bachelor of Education program is fully recognized as meeting the requirements for teacher certification within the Province of Alberta.

This program offers you the opportunity to obtain both a Bachelor of Science (BSc) and a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree within five years. This means that the end of this five-year program, you will receive two undergraduate degrees, and be recommended for certification to Alberta Education to teach in Kindergarten through Grade 12 classrooms.

We are committed to actively engaging you in meaningful ways, to help you to develop teaching-related skills, and knowledge, and gain experiences that are important to the 21st century classroom. You will be inspired by our internationally-renowned professors who are known for their research in key areas of teacher education.

During the five years, you will spend three years in the Faculty of Science and two years in the Werklund School of Education. The following courses will be completed within the Faculty of Science portion of the Concurrent program.

  • One semester-long course in English (or French) Literature
  • Education 201

Students should consult with Academic Requirements, and their Faculty of Science Advisors, to ensure that the Literature course they decide to take meets degree requirements.

Students wishing to pursue either the elementary or secondary route in the Concurrent Education program should complete the courses listed below in their first year. Due to the compressed nature of this program, it is important you follow this sequence and check with your faculty advisors for future registration.

1. Mathematics 249 is open only to students without MATH 31.

2. Data Science 201 is a prerequisite for Data Science 211 and would need to be taken in the fall semester.

Natural Science

1. Mathematics 249 is open only to students without MATH 31.

2. Physics 221 requires PHYS 30 & MATH 31. Students who do not meet these prerequisites may take Physics 211.

3. Mathematics 267 is not required but should be taken if you are interested in Physical Chemistry courses.

4. An Open Option is any course offered by any Faculty.

1. Mathematics 249 is open only to students without MATH 31.

2. Physics 221 requires PHYS 30 & MATH 31. Students who do not meet these prerequisites may take Physics 211.

3. Mathematics 267 is not required but should be taken if you are interested in Physical Chemistry courses.

Admission into either the On-Campus or Community-Based BEd After Degrees requires that applicants have completed an undergraduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Students should refer to their specific Registration Guides (On-Campus or Community-Based) for information on course selection.

Concurrent Students

In the first three years of the Concurrent pathway, your program advisor will be from your non-Education faculty. As a Concurrent Education student, you are required to complete EDUC 201, as well as a 3-unit course in English Literature or French Literature prior to entering your 400-level Education courses.
