Men’s volleyball team wins Dino cup

The highlight of a busy weekend in hockey, soccer, field hockey and volleyball was a 3-0 win over the UCLA Bruins by the men’s volleyball team to win the Husky Dino Cup. Read the full weekend game wrap.

VOLLEYBALL: 23rd Annual Husky Dino Cup
The Dinos weren’t very gracious as hosts over the weekend, winning the Husky Dino Cup title for the ninth time with a 3-0 win over the UCLA Bruins in the championship match. Calgary’s David Egan was named the tournament MVP, while Oleg Podporin and Graham Vigrass landed on the all-tournament team. The women’s team lost to UBC, but won back-to-back games against Brandon. Volleyball action gets underway for real this weekend when the Dinos visit Alberta.

MEN’S HOCKEY
(Thursday: Lethbridge 4, Dinos 3; Saturday: Dinos 6, Lethbridge 5.)
Very little separated the Dinos from the Lethbridge Pronghorns this weekend, with both games heading to a shootout and the home team coming out on top both times. Brock Nixon and Brett O’Malley each had three goals for the Dinos (2-1-1) on the weekend, with Nixon scoring the shootout winner Saturday night.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY
(Friday: Saskatchewan 5, Dinos 0; Saturday: Saskatchewan 3, Dinos 2.)
The Saskatchewan Huskies remained undefeated, sweeping their two-game set with the Dinos (1-3) in the first CIS women’s hockey action in Calgary since 2002. Katie Urness played admirably in goal, kicking out several Saskatchewan chances.

SOCCER
The Dinos men’s soccer team remained in the playoff hunt this weekend with a win and a tie on the road at Saskatchewan (3-1) and Alberta (0-0), while the women were virtually eliminated after dropping a 2-0 decision at Trinity Western and a 6-0 loss at UBC.

FIELD HOCKEY
Despite a pair of shutout losses (1-0, 2-0) to the Victoria Vikes, the field hockey Dinos remain in the playoff hunt, trailing the Alberta Pandas by one point in the standings with two games to play. Those two games will be played in Edmonton against the Pandas, where the Dinos need at least a win and a tie to qualify for the national championship.

RUGBY
The Dinos ended their first-ever CIS rugby season by dropping a 71-0 decision to the Alberta Pandas Friday afternoon in their only home action of the season.
