Ted was a devoted business leader and philanthropist whose work in Canadian public policy and business is widely recognized in both the private and government sectors. He served on the boards of several major Canadian companies and non-profit organizations, shaping business and philanthropic communities across the country.

His relationship with the University of Calgary began in 1996, when he was appointed as the chair for the Board of Governors. During his five years of service, he worked closely with the university’s leadership team to initiate the institution’s strategic transformation.

“Mr. Newall has been a great friend to the university, and his leadership and altruism go far beyond what he has so selflessly given to our campus. He was a champion for many organizations—including the university—and he will be greatly missed,” says Elizabeth Cannon, president and vice-chancellor.

Both Ted and his wife, Margaret, are longtime Chancellor’s Club members who have supported numerous awards and endowments on campus. These include the Margaret and Ted Newall Bursaries, the Entrance Bursary in Nursing and the BNAT Nursing Scholarship, and the Terry and Sue White Doctoral Scholarship. They also gave generously to the Take Your Place campaign in 2006, an initiative to enhance student spaces on campus.

Ted was awarded many accolades for his accomplishments and received honorary doctor of laws degrees from the University of Calgary, University of Saskatchewan, University of Regina and the University of Ottawa. In 1994, he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada, and in 2001, he was inducted into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame.

A memorial service for Ted Newall will be held Friday, May 4 at the Calgary Golf and Country Club "Centennial Room" at 1 p.m.
