During their third and final year of study, students participate in a variety of senior research studios, exposing them to different approaches to architecture, work that is displayed in this final show. It features investigations into structurally intelligent SWARMS, responsive architecture, modular affordable housing, as well as projects from the Barcelona and Melbourne study abroad programs.

“The exhibition represents the culmination of years of study and hard work from a dedicated and talented group of students,” says Nancy Pollock-Ellwand, EVDS dean. “I encourage the community to visit the Kasian Gallery to view these thought-provoking projects.”

The interdisciplinary nature of the MArch program connects academia, industry and the community. The time commitment demanded by students in these final studios is considerable. This year, the new and emerging ideas generated through these senior studios have been impressive.

“For Professor Graham Livesey’s senior studio, the class submitted to a design competition with Habitat for Humanity,” says Margo Glenn, EVDS student association president and graduating MArch student. “The class drew design inspiration from technologies though two local companies, DIRTT and Sprung, who joined us in the classroom, to create modular sustainable, affordable homes.”

The exhibition opening is Thursday, May 3 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the EVDS Kasian Gallery and is open to the public. The Kasian Gallery is just outside of EVDS reception in Room 2145 and is open Monday thru Friday from 8:30-4:30 p.m. The exhibition will remain open until the end of May.

The Kasian Gallery, sponsored by Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning Ltd, is the main social gathering space for the environmental design faculty. It plays an essential role in the life of EVDS—providing valuable space for our students, faculty members and professionals to display their research and work. It serves as a vital function of demonstration and inspiration for design.
