The University of Calgary Alumni Association’s 2012 Arch Awards celebration May 31 will have a distinctly western theme this year in honour of our Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Vern Kimball.

Kimball will be joined by green energy entrepreneur Nick Blitterswyk, the Graduate of the Last Decade Award recipient, and Faculty of Medicine student Dave Campbell, the Future Alumni Award recipient.

Under Kimball’s leadership, revenue at the Stampede has grown by more than 30 per cent to more than $100 million annually—all of which is invested back into programs, services and facilities.

“(When I got the call), I was flattered, thrilled and then mostly humbled, especially as I learned who some of the previous award winners are,” says Kimball. “Some of the happiest years of my life were spent at the ‘U’ and being presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award is truly an honour.”

Graduate of the Last Decade recipient Nick Blitterswyk is a green energy entrepreneur. After working as an actuary in New York City, Blitterswyk traded probability for sustainability in 2008 and co-founded Urban Green Energy (UGE). Just four years later, UGE is a premier manufacturer and supplier of green energy solutions with 150 employees and installations in more than 60 countries.

“During my years at the university I learned that anything dreamed was possible, and I feel I owe much of this award to the great people I met, both classmates and faculty, who helped influence what UGE is today," says Blitterswyk. “Thanks for believing in me, UGE, and a greener future.”

The Future Alumni Award was introduced in 2009 and Campbell says he’s hounoured to receive it. “Over the past three years, my experience at the university has been so positive, due largely to bright fellow students, supportive faculty, and generous alumni,” he says.” I am humbled to have been chosen to receive this award.”

“Vern, Nick and David are outstanding representatives of the University of Calgary alumni and future alumni family,” says Alumni Association president Ken McKinnon, QC, BComm’80. “They’re joining an impressive list of recipients and I have no doubt they will continue to live up to the high standards of these awards.”

The invitation only Arch Awards celebration will take place on May 31 at Theatre Junction GRAND in downtown Calgary. For more information please visit
