On Feb. 27, the Schulich School of Engineering hosted the 22nd annual Student Excellence Awards at Calgary’s Hotel Arts. Nearly 500 guests attended the event, which recognizes student excellence and celebrates the generosity of donors that have contributed to awards, prizes, scholarships and bursaries.

Every year, undergraduate students at the Schulich School of Engineering receive more than $5 million in scholarships and bursaries funded by donors in the community, including industry partners. The Student Excellence Awards provides the opportunity for students to meet the donors that are investing in their education.

“You are the leaders of tomorrow and you are shining examples of excellence,” Dean Guy Gendron told the students. “You have boosted the academic standard and you’ve been part of building the vibrant student culture and community at our school. It’s your dedication that sets the Schulich School of Engineering apart.”

The program included remarks from keynote speaker Mike Begin, president of Spartan Controls; Cam Kramer, senior vice-president and chief operating officer of Arc Resources, who spoke on behalf of the donors; and Michael Algra, fourth-year civil engineering student, who spoke on behalf of the students.
