Choosing a Chair

By Clayton MacGillivray

Less than a year ago, the Werklund Foundation Centre for Youth Leadership Education was founded with a $3-million gift to the Faculty of Education. The purpose of the centre is to develop and support research, teaching and community service activities that enhance opportunities for youth to develop leadership aptitudes and abilities in home, school and community settings.

Now, the Faculty of Education is poised to take the next step in the centre’s development by selecting a chair to lead the organization in fulfilling its mission.

After a considered recruitment process Dr. Diane Conrad of the University of Alberta and Dr. Shirley R. Steinberg of McGill University and the University of Barcelona have been invited to present their work in the field of youth leadership. Dr. Dennis Sumara, education faculty dean, invites faculty, staff, students and the campus community to participate by attending these discussions.

Dr. Diane Conrad, University of Alberta Youth Empowerment Praxis: Engaging Youth through Active Participation will be held Tuesday, Dec. 14 from 12 - 1 p.m. in EDT 830.

Dr. Steinberg, McGill University and University of Barcelona Redefining the Notion of Youth: Creating a Vision for Strong Leadership will be held Friday, Dec. 17 from 12 - 1 p.m. in EDT 830.
