Outdoor Centre celebrates comeback year

Staff at the University of Calgary Outdoor Centre have reason to celebrate spring this year. After a tough year of restructuring and refocusing, the Centre is reporting a greatly improved bottom-line and an extremely positive outlook.

“The most important thing is that we have proven this year that the Centre is both sustainable and important to the University Campus and to the city of Calgary,” says Kurtis Kinnear, director, Outdoor Centre. “We’ve served well over 50,000 students and members of the community this year. We’ve increased and improved our equipment rental inventory perhaps most importantly we’ve kept all of our major programs running, which seemed unlikely a year ago.”

Kinnear took over as director of the Outdoor Centre in December of 2007 and was faced with serious financial issues and open discussion as to whether an Outdoor Centre programs and rental centre was even a viable business to run on campus.  He says that while he was forced to make some difficult decisions—he believes the Centre is in much better shape to succeed in the future.

“The idea behind the Centre is pretty simple and pretty important. We live in the beautiful foothills of Alberta and the Faculty of Kinesiology has a mandate to get and keep people active,” says Kinnear. “The Centre was created to help people get active and to discover new activities in the great outdoors.” Since it’s creation in 1977 the Outdoor Centre has become the largest outdoor program and equipment rental centre based on a university campus and has processed over 430,000 work orders representing over a million customers.

To show their appreciation to the students, staff and faculty of the University of Calgary, the Outdoor Centre is having an unprecedented 50 percent off sale.

Simply show your UC ID card when you book between April 3-13, and you’ll receive half off, which Kinnear describes as a ‘thank you’ for helping the Outdoor Centre to complete one of their most successful years.
